Service Description

Open to adults 65 and over, this creative, accessible class is perfect for those who have never made a book and will rekindle an enthusiasm for anyone with prior experience. We will explore a variety of small hand-made books made with materials that are economical and easily obtainable. We will ponder the question “What makes a book a book?” as we create both traditional and non-traditional structures that can be used as sketchbooks, scrapbooks, notebooks, or gift books. We will fold, cut, stitch and glue. All supplies are included, but you may wish to bring some special papers, rubber stamps, photos, or other embellishments to personalize your mini tomes. Instructor Leslie Cefali learned to bind her first book in college, using a cut up cardboard box, copy paper, sewing thread and wallpaper pieces. She fell in love with the process and set out to learn “every book structure out there,” and she is still learning. She invites you to join her on your own handmade book journey! Free bus transportation for Art Within Reach students is available through Porter County Aging and Community Services.
