Intermediate/ Advanced Pastel Class via Zoom
Combination Demos and Critiques with Mary Ann Pals

Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00 pm

Join Mary Ann via Zoom as she demonstrates detailed pastel techniques while developing her own artwork from her home studio week by week, and also receive formal written and verbal critiques of individual pastel projects.  Students can choose their own projects or ones provided by Mary Ann.  During the first class, help will be given to each student in choosing a reference photo that has a sound composition, attractive light/dark contrast, and color harmonies.  Students will then work at their own pace outside of class and email their progress pictures to Mary Ann each week for a formal critique during each subsequent class session.


Virtual Watercolor with Julia Holmaas

Paint together and learn how to paint bold vivid watercolors with guidance from Julia Holmaas. Advanced beginners as well as advanced students will paint together via Zoom. The class will take a tutorial approach, each week concepts will be reviewed, the basics of color mixing, wet and dry techniques, elements of design and composition will be addressed.


This will be a collaborative endeavor with student input as to the subject matter. We will paint landscapes and still lifes together. A suggested supply list will be provided if desired by participants.

Are you tired of working alone and longing to get some insight from others on your Art Work?
The Art Barn is sponsoring a once a month Virtual Review.

Join Julia Holmaas by video conference call and share your recent work. We will look at the paintings together and talk about what works and what could be improved. The painting should be recent work done at home either from life or reference photos.
Respond to Julia at via email. She will then send you the link to join via Google Meet along with information on what to expect and how to prepare for the meeting.

Session 5: Saturday, October 9, 2:00-3:30pm (virtual via Zoom) - Fall Fireflies


This is a playful Autumn nocturnal study with plenty of room for fall colors. The lights emitted by fireflies will be a contrasting fun glow.

Session 6: Saturday, December 11, 2:00-3:30pm (virtual via Zoom) - Winter Window Scene: Learn how to create an intimate wooded snow scene through a frosty window.

Lee Bauman will guide students through the process of painting a scene inspired by the dunes.

The series of events hosted by the Indiana Dunes National Park in partnership with the Art Barn School of Art is generously sponsored by Friends of Indiana Dunes.


The classes are free, open to beginners, and accessible to those with physical limitations. Every event will feature a different theme related to the National Park or dunes. By coming together our organizations are collectively able to accomplish a common goal of reaching more individuals through cultural programming that links art and nature together.

Notes: No prior experience necessary. 

All participants must be 18 or older. All supplies included. Unvaccinated participants required to wear masks.
