Service Description

This short workshop series with Julia Holmaas will help students with prior watercolor experience to build on their techniques and work on more advanced projects. Painting on different surfaces, achieving special effects with watercolor, and more will be covered each week. Each workshop will cover a different surface. *Please note that you may book individual sessions/topics separately; each week will explore a different surface, or you may book all four together and save $20! Jan 26: Watercolor on Hot Press paper Painting on this 100% cotton rag paper with a relatively non absorbent smooth surface can be a challenge for painters used to cold press paper. During this session students will learn to let color mix and flow on the paper. Feb 2: Watercolor on Canvas We will be painting on specially finished stretched canvas that has an absorbent surface for water media. Learn to layer and lift to create sparkling watercolor paintings. Julia will also demonstrate how to finish a painting with Dorland wax so it can be framed without glass. Feb 9: Watercolor on Yupo Want to get out of a creative rut? Painting on totally non absorbent Yupo gets you out of your comfort zone and allows you to play. Explore letting color mix and flow and if you don’t like what happens, wash or wipe the surface totally clean and start over! Feb 16: Watercolor on Aquabord Watercolors on Ampersand’s Aquabord appear more vibrant than on paper and do not need to be framed with glass. The absorbent surface is similar to cold press paper BUT is more abrasive. Demonstrating in both watercolor and gouache, Julia will cover how to prepare the surface for painting, what brushes to use and how to successfully apply, layer, and lift. Suggested supply list: - Covered palette - Brushes: 1.5 or 2" flat brush, 1" flat with shaped handle for scraping and burnishing, #10 or #12 round, #4 or #6 round, #1 rigger - Paint: artist quality (Windsor Newton, Grumbacher, etc.) in the following basic colors: alizarin crimson, bright red or perm. red light, new gamboge, lemon yellow or quinacridone gold, French ultramarine blue, Prussian blue - paper: 140 lb Arches or Windsor cold press watercolor paper - spray bottle - sponges Art Barn will have available water resistant boards for paper, water containers, cotton rags, masking tape, pencils, erasers, straight edges, hair dryers, and all surfaces/papers for painting experimentation.
