PAINTING WITH PASTELS

Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30pm
Beginner: Apr 21-May 19, $80/ 5-wk sess

Intermediate & Advanced: May 5-19, $50/ 3-wk sess 
 

Students will be guided step by step through the process of painting with soft pastels with experienced artist and instructor Mary Ann Pals. A 5-week series, designed for those new to the process, will provide a couple weeks of instruction before intermediate and advanced students join the class on week 3.  Students will be provided with a supply list after the first class. Ages 18 and older.

With Instructor Harold Woodridge, students will learn the basics of working with clay. Students will explore slab, coil, and wheel-throwing to create functional and decorative work. This class is appropriate for beginning or intermediate potters. Class size limited to 6 students. All supplies included. Ages 18 and older.

This class is for students with some experience working with clay who have a basic understanding of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Instruction with Harold Woodridge will focus on complex forms such as handles, spouts, and lids, as well as surface decoration. Class size limited to 6 students. All supplies included. Ages 18 and older.

INTRO TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Beginners will learn from photographer and instructor Deb Armstrong who will teach basic camera functions and settings, lighting and exposure, composition, file management, and storage, digital editing, and online/social media use. Participants will learn how to operate their digital SLR cameras and learn how to compose eye-catching photos instead of just snapshots. Assignments and group critiques will help advance your skills. Bring your camera and come ready to learn!

INTENSIVE WORKSHOP

 May 21 - May 23, Fri 2-4pm, Sat - Sun 9am-3pm

Join us on this papermaking adventure of creating paper from plants that surround you. From farming by-product to locally wild gathered plants, understand the process of turning plant cellulose into fine sheets of paper. Participate in a community field hike around Art Barn on Friday 2-4pm where we will identify and harvest plant species and follow up with processing plant material on Saturday and making sheets of paper on Sunday. The paper made will be a lovely array of color and texture due to the plants attributes. Paper can be works of art in and of themselves or can be used in tandem with another art process such as photography, printing, drawing, painting, sculpting, or bookmaking. Ages 18+

Composition is arguably the most important and difficult principle for an artist to understand since it utilizes all of the other elements of painting. Without a strong composition, your work may go unnoticed. Mark breaks down the elements of composition into simple and understandable ideas. You will learn the underlying principles that lead to a strong composition, including 10 ways to create and lead the viewer to focal points, and how to create harmony through the use of value, shape, and color. Lunch provided. A supply list will be provided. Ages 18+

Students will learn the basic skills needed to draw anything they see, strategies that unify these skills, and the acceleration techniques that will help them to become faster without sacrificing accuracy. The class will introduce students to exercises that will strengthen mastery of each skill. The Class is an eye-opening experience for complete beginners as well as seasoned artists. BIRDS IN WATERCOLOR WITH PEGGY MACNAMARA

Join us for a day of learning how to paint birds using watercolor. Peggy Macnamara is a celebrated watercolor artist who has served as Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History’s Artist-in-Residence for 30 years. Macnamara has traveled with Field Museum scientists all over the world to paint nature and illustrate conservation efforts. She has published 4 books in collaboration with museum scientists through the University of Chicago Press. We have teamed up with Humane Indiana to provide live models to enhance this experience. Lunch provided. A supply list will be provided.  Ages 18+

SILK DYEING WORKSHOP

June 19, 10am-1pm

Ages: 18 +

Join instructor Lee Bauman for a one-day silk dyeing workshop. Learn the fascinating art of dyeing silk. Different styles and techniques will be demonstrated. Come design your own scarf and learn a new skill. Scarves will be available for pick up on Saturday, June 26 from 10am-2pm.

CELL PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Everyone's a photographer! Many are using their cell phones as their primary camera. Participants will learn cell phone camera settings as well as basic composition and lighting techniques that will help boost creativity. Even if you're not on social media, instructor Deb Armstrong will provide a few tips and techniques that will turn your snapshots into wonderful images that you will want to share. Bring your phone! Ages 18+

NATURE WALK PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Join Deb Armstrong on a leisurely nature walk through the Art Barn property. Deb will share tips to improve your Nature Photography skills. She will provide instructions for smartphones, point & shoot cameras, and DSLR cameras to capture better photos of plants and wildlife. After the nature walk participants will regroup with a Q&A discussion led by Deb. Bring your preferred device to capture nature at the Art Barn. Ages 18+

COLLAGE WORKSHOP

Join instructor Suzie Rosso in learning the art of collaging on canvas, a fun, no-stress way to create a painting! No experience necessary. Just bring a couple of possible subjects (photos or pictures from a magazine) and a lunch. We'll just cut & glue our way to a beautiful heartwarming painting that's ready to frame. Supplies will be provided.

HOLIDAY GLASS WORKSHOP

November 13, 10am-1pm

Instructor Mindy Milan will provide an introduction to the fascinating world of warm glass or glass fusing. Students will create jewelry-size pieces, small plates, and candle holders utilizing several techniques. Watch glass melt in the kiln, and learn about the colors and processes of forming glass. Learn a new skill and make gifts for loved ones! All materials provided.  Pieces will be available  for pickup at Art Barn on Sat, Nov 20 from 10am-2pm
